According to a report in the National, DUBAI // Zayed University will be welcoming its first batch of psychology students this term as it aims to meet the ever-growing demand for experts in the field.

And according to Dr Justin Thomas, one of the teachers on the course, a psychology degree does not necessarily mean a career as a clinical psychologist.“There is a great need for counsellors in schools and big business does better if they tap into the knowledge and skills of psychologists,” he said. “The skills and opportunities are much wider for the graduates than you’d imagine.”

Just a handful of institutions in the UAE offer psychology, despite rising demand from students and society.“With all the social change the UAE is seeing, there are issues that are common all over the world, such as rising divorce rates, meaning the need for people like marriage counsellors,” Dr Thomas, a columnist for The National, said.

UAE authorities have confirmed a public and private sector holiday on Thursday, January 24 to celebrate Milad Al Nabi, the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). This was reported on Arabianbusiness.com

Ministries and federal departments will remain closed on 12th of Rabi Al Awwal, 1434 Hijri. The circular was issued by Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qattami, Minister of Education and Chairman of the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources.

All private and public sector employees will be given paid holiday for the day. Work will resume on Sunday, January 27, authorities said in comments published on state news agency WAM.

The US hardware and software provider Oracle is looking to double its workforce in the Middle East and Africa within the next five years, according to the company’s president.

Dubai Launchpad

Oracle chose Dubai as a launch pad for its global cloud computing initiative yesterday to highlight the significance of the region for both the company and the development of technology.

“We are in the region to ensure our commitment. This is a high-growth region, and there is a lot of IT opportunity in this region,” said Mark Hurd, the global president of Oracle, in a speech.

The company is looking to open new offices and development centres to boost its Oracle Development Initiative, which aims to educate 500,000 students throughout the Middle East and Africa about technology and to get Oracle products in their hands.
